Kidney disease affects more than 1 in 7 US adults—that’s 35.5 million Americans. With an unmatched scope of programs, the American Kidney Fund directly supports patients and caregivers wherever they are in the fight against the disease, from prevention to post-transplant living. As Chief Medical Officer (CMO), you will enhance AKF’s capacity to serve our patient and clinical communities effectively, ensuring that our programs and services are based on the latest medical research and standards of care and are aligned with the best interests of those with kidney disease.

 

Reporting to the Vice President of Patient Support and Education and as a part of the Leadership Team, you will provide medical insights to AKF staff, assist the VP with research endeavors, including developing a research collaborative to enable AKF to proactively seek out mission-aligned projects, and serve as the face of the AKF at scientific and medical events. This is a highly visible role in which you’ll leverage your expertise, leadership, and networks to connect with leaders of peer organizations and serve as our top medical expert to bolster AKF’s credibility and authority. This is a part-time, contract position.

 

How You’ll Make an Impact

AKF is one of the fastest-growing patient advocacy nonprofits in the kidney space, and your expertise will be instrumental in propelling our mission forward. By providing high-level clinical authority and insight, you will enable AKF to quickly respond to breakthroughs in research and policy developments and navigate complex ethical issues around research and funding. Key focus areas include:

Leadership and Representation

  • Represent AKF as a thought leader and medical expert at professional conferences, FDA interactions, and in collaboration with CMOs of other peer organizations, industry, and providers.
  • Provide clinical insights about patient/provider interactions to AKF staff and external partners. Translate complex research into plain language for a variety of audiences.
  • Participate in the development of AKF policy regarding CMS quality measures for patient care.
  • Serve as a resource for AKF management regarding staff and public health issues, such as those related to COVID.

Research and Education

  • Collaborate with the Vice President of Patient Support and Education and Senior Director of Clinical Education to create a research framework for Clinical Scientist in Nephrology (CSN) program alumni and institutions.
  • Serve as a research author on targeted research projects in collaboration with other researchers/groups.
  • Participate in AKF’s Medical Advisory Committee meetings to guide research and clinical education initiatives.
  • Create and present content for CME courses to educate healthcare professionals.

Media and Public Engagement

  • Develop and contribute content to AKF platforms, such as “Ask the Nephrologist” website feature, podcast interviews on emerging clinical topics, and livestream social media discussions on topics in nephrology.
  • Serve as a media spokesperson for medically focused interviews and maintain a strong social media presence (Twitter/X, LinkedIn) to interact with the renal community and build AKF’s brand presence.

 

Work Environment, Salary, and Benefits

  • You’ll enjoy a remote work environment with an average of 1-2 days weekly. Your schedule will be flexible according to the workload and meeting cadence throughout the year. Travel up to 10% is required for meetings and events.
  • The budgeted salary for this position is $125K annually.

Qualifications

  • A medical degree (MD or DO) and an active license as a physician are required, with a minimum of 7-10 years of experience in practicing nephrology. A Master of Public Health (MPH) degree and/or Master Certified Health Education Specialist (MCHES) certification are preferred.
  • In-depth and current knowledge of renal care, the US healthcare system, and a robust understanding of health and medical information. Experience working on issues related to health equity and social determinants of health is a plus.
  • Understanding of Medicare quality measures.
  • Demonstrated experience working in a rapidly growing, collaborative organization and developing effective working relationships internally and externally.
  • Experience reviewing scientific literature and communicating findings to professional and lay audiences.
  • A track record as a clear, persuasive communicator in written and verbal communications. Adept at describing AKF programs and their benefits to stakeholders and making presentations to a variety of audiences.
