The Capital Area Food Bank (CAFB) is moving beyond traditional philanthropy to advance its mission and drive growth with a sophisticated approach to business model innovation and revenue diversification. As Chief Financial Officer, you will report to and partner closely with the CEO to develop a forward-thinking financial strategy that identifies and capitalizes on opportunities for market expansion and advances CAFB’s strategic goals. Leveraging our state-of-the-art data systems, you will lead efforts to transform how we use information—streamlining processes, developing real-time dashboards to support decision-making, using data to identify service delivery gaps, and taking an agile approach to resource allocation to respond to evolving market and community needs.
CAFB is proud to deliver the equivalent of 60 million meals through direct distribution and food assistance partners to people in D.C., Maryland, and Virginia every year, but that’s only the beginning. We are investing in long-term solutions that address the interrelated issues of food security, poverty, and equity through partnerships that integrate food with education, health care, job training, and more.
As a valued member of the Executive Leadership Team, you will lead three departments: Finance and Accounting, Information Technology, and Compliance and Risk Management, with a total of 3 direct reports and 14 indirect reports. You will empower teams to execute daily operations while maintaining accountability for strategic outcomes. Overseeing a $55M operating budget with a total balance sheet exceeding $100M, you will lead all forecasting, financial planning, accounting, technology initiatives, and compliance monitoring, ensuring sound policies guide all aspects of financial operations. The key to your success will flow from your ability to leverage a complex ecosystem of data and systems, anticipate challenges, adapt to change, and clearly communicate financial information to a variety of audiences.
How You’ll Make an Impact
As the primary fiscal advisor to the CEO and a financial business partner to staff across the organization, you will play a key role in shaping how financial strategy drives innovation and impact at CAFB. In your first year:
- You’ll support the launch of 1-2 new business models that enhance our ability to provide food for communities today and address the root causes of hunger.
- Through market and community needs analysis, you’ll help CAFB better understand the profiles of those we serve so we can meet communities where they are and maximize impact.
- Using data to show how every dollar makes a difference, you’ll build trust with donors and key stakeholders, ensuring CAFB remains the region’s trusted ally in food security while helping communities break the cycle of poverty for generations to come.
Work Environment, Salary, and Benefits
- You’ll enjoy a hybrid work environment, collaborating with the Executive Leadership Team and staff 3 days weekly in our Northeast Washington, D.C. office (with travel as needed to our Lorton, VA warehouse). Working hours are between 8:30 am and 5:00 pm ET.
- The budgeted salary range for this position is $250K – 270K with an outstanding benefits package including generous PTO; comprehensive medical, dental, and vision plans; a 3% retirement match; up to 4% profit sharing; free onsite parking; complimentary shuttle to metro; and professional development, growth, and volunteer opportunities.
Responsibilities
Financial Operations – 65%
- Oversee all aspects of the Finance and Accounting Department (1 direct; 7 indirect reports).
- With the Executive Team, develop strategic options that support the Capital Area Food Bank’s mission, ensuring that the economic model of the organization and underlying systems and structures effectively support the Capital Area Food Bank’s current and future programmatic work.
- Work closely with the CEO to build the financial framework of the organization’s strategy for the next five to ten years. Collaborate on alternative revenue models to help achieve those goals and mission objectives.
- Provide strong leadership and development opportunities for finance department staff.
- Develop partnerships across the organization, working with Executive Team members to strengthen collaboration and efficiencies across departments.
- Provide leadership in the development and continuous evaluation of short and long-term financial objectives.
- Lead the Capital Area Food Bank’s annual budgeting process and manage the timely development of an annual budget. Work directly with Executive Team members and their deputies to prepare and understand departmental budgets.
- Keep Executive Team members informed about relevant issues/developments in finance activities.
- Work with the CEO to prepare Board presentations and attend necessary Board and committee meetings. Serve as staff lead for the Audit and Finance Committees.
- Ensure that effective internal controls are in place, including compliance with applicable federal, state, and local regulatory laws.
- Manage the Capital Area Food Bank’s annual audit, generation of financial statements, and timely submission of legally required filings and tax documents.
- Provide actionable analysis regarding financial performance, trends, and long-term forecasts.
- Create/enhance systems for tracking and reporting on restricted funding.
- Strategize and recommend ways in which the Capital Area Food Bank can improve fiscal efficiency and effectiveness.
- Provide oversight and guidance on the Capital Area Food Bank’s investment portfolio.
Information Technology – 20%
- Oversee all aspects of the IT department, including Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP), end-user applications, network environment, and cyber security (1 direct; 6 indirect reports).
- Maintain and develop multi-year technology strategies related to ERP, data integration, end-user applications, support, and security with the aim of improving the effectiveness and security of technology employed at CAFB for staff, partners, and clients.
- Act as the executive sponsor of major technology initiatives; communicate and champion technology initiatives throughout the organization.
- Strategize with the team and others throughout the organization on the impact of AI in enhancing our efficiency and effectiveness.
Compliance and Risk Management – 15%
- Oversee the compliance and risk management functions within CAFB (1 direct; 1 indirect report).
- Maintain strategic plans to ensure continuous improvement in compliance with grant requirements and other regulations and identification/mitigation of organizational risks.
- Assist the department in annual planning of internal program and administrative reviews, reporting of compliance outcomes.
- Manage corporate insurance program, including annual renewals and coverage reviews.
- With CAFB’s COO, share oversight of CAFB’s Continuity of Operations (COOP) and other disaster plans for any event that may occur within the organization and across our network and region.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field; CPA and/or MBA preferred.
- 20+ years of senior finance and accounting experience at a revenue scale of $25M+; a mix of nonprofit and for-profit experience is preferred.
- A track record in grants management, particularly compliance and reporting for government, corporate, foundation, and individual funding; experience with Medicaid is a plus.
- Demonstrated leadership in managing cross-functional, diverse teams and the foresight and ability to delegate accordingly. Resourcefulness and skill in setting and managing multiple priorities and guiding investment in people and systems.
- Strong data analysis, communication, and project management skills with the ability to synthesize complex information, develop dashboards with actionable insights, and design workflows that improve efficiency and decision-making.
