Assistant Controller

The Center for Reproductive Rights (the Center) is the only global legal advocacy organization dedicated to advancing reproductive rights. As our impact continues to expand, we are seeking an Assistant Controller eager to navigate a dynamic international financial environment, strengthen accounting operations, and support process and system improvements.

As Assistant Controller, you will report to and work closely with the Controller and lead a team of 2 to execute accounting operations for our $50M+ global organization with offices in New York, Nairobi, Bogotá, Geneva, and Washington, DC. You will manage general ledger accounting, revenue recognition, and monthly closings while ensuring efficiency, accuracy, and compliance with regulatory standards and internal controls across regions. You will also maintain the ERP system, support external financial reporting and audits (including grant audits), and refine workflows to support the increasing complexity of our portfolio.

As we prepare to implement new ERP and AP systems, we’re focused on standardizing processes across regional offices. Your adaptability and problem-solving skills will be essential in helping the Controller create consistency and improve efficiency. Because our operations span multiple regions, collaboration is key. You’ll help to ensure that teams work within a unified, transparent, and fair financial structure by building strong working relationships with local and international colleagues and providing the support they need.

Work Environment, Salary, and Benefits

  • You’ll enjoy a hybrid schedule with 3 days in-office weekly at our NYC location.
  • This position offers a salary of $144K and an outstanding benefits package, covering up to 95% of comprehensive health insurance with no in-network deductible and top-tier reproductive healthcare, including infertility. Additional benefits include dental and vision insurance, generous PTO (paid parental leave, personal days, vacation, and sick leave), office closure during the last week of December, and a professional development stipend. After one year, the Center contributes 7.5% of your salary to a 401(k).

Responsibilities

  • Work closely with the Controller to develop, update, maintain, and ensure compliance with standard GAAP accounting procedures, policies, and internal controls.
  • Assist in the implementation of new accounting pronouncements.
  • Oversee the management of the accounting system, including obtaining a thorough understanding of the system and structure to ensure efficient procedures are being used.
  • Support preparation and review of audit timeline, workflow, and workpapers.
  • Support preparation and review of Form 990 timeline, workflow, and workpapers.
  • Assist in the management of external financial reporting for the Center.
  • Manage timely, accurate, and consistent monthly and annual general ledger closings.
  • Review the recording of all revenue, including release and recognition of temporary restricted and government funding.
  • Oversee administration of corporate credit card program, including approving credit card requests and reviewing and posting of credit card transactions.
  • Oversee the completion and review of all balance sheet reconciliations in a timely manner.
  • Work with Controller to develop unit budget and reprojections.
  • Respond to inquiries and ad-hoc financial reporting requests.
  • Monitor bank account balances and deposit activities.

 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting with 10+ years of progressive accounting experience, including general ledger management, transaction analysis, revenue recognition, and financial compliance. Supervisory experience in an accounting or finance environment is required.
  • Non-profit accounting experience is preferred, ideally in a global organization with exposure to grant reconciliation and international accounting.
  • Strong understanding of GAAP and proficiency in accounting software, Excel, and financial reporting tools.
  • Experience implementing new accounting pronouncements, system improvements, and process efficiencies.
  • Hands-on experience in audit preparation, Form 990 compliance, monthly and annual closings, balance sheet reconciliations, and banking oversight.
  • A commitment to reproductive rights and women’s human rights issues.
