Reporting to and partnering with our forward-thinking Board of Directors, you will develop and implement a strategic vision for AMHIC’s future. This includes leveraging connections within the nonprofit community to drive targeted membership growth and effectively navigating changes in the regulatory environment and healthcare insurance market, all while maintaining exceptional value for our members. You will lead two direct reports—the Director of Finance & Administration and the Operations Manager—and manage relationships with over 18 vendor partners to ensure smooth daily operations and full compliance with insurance regulations and industry standards.

Under the careful leadership of the outgoing executive, AMHIC has achieved steady growth, earned a stellar reputation in the nonprofit community, and built collaborative relationships with reliable partners to help fulfill its mission. We will look to you to build on this foundation and lead AMHIC into its next chapter. Thanks to prudent fiscal management, AMHIC holds over $10 million in current assets and investments available to pay claims and support operations. You will have the resources needed to propose and implement new strategic initiatives.

 

Key Focus Areas: How You Will Make an Impact

  • Strategic Vision and Implementation. Collaborate with the Board to develop strategies that support financial stability and overall organizational health, ensuring alignment with AMHIC’s mission and service-focused values. Implement innovative approaches to optimize staff and vendor operations, enhance member benefit services, and achieve sustainable growth.
  • Board Governance. Leverage the Board’s diverse expertise to address complex challenges in the health insurance landscape. Proactively identify emerging issues, provide thorough information and analysis, and facilitate productive, action-oriented discussions, ensuring appropriate follow-up to support data-driven decision-making.
  • Financial Stewardship. Strengthen AMHIC’s financial position by effectively managing costs, staying current on industry trends, and navigating complex claims. Ensure AMHIC continues to provide exceptional benefits programs to members despite rising healthcare costs, including those from new treatments, specialty drugs, expanded mental health services, increased claims post-COVID, and other market developments.
  • Relationship Building. Cultivate effective relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders, including board members, AMHIC members, vendor partners, and service providers. Leverage connections within the nonprofit community to identify and pursue peer-to-peer marketing opportunities. Maintain clear and consistent communication to uphold AMHIC’s high standards of service across all levels.
  • Regulatory Compliance. Ensure AMHIC meticulously adheres to all legal and regulatory requirements, being mindful of the broader political and regulatory landscape to prevent any actions that could result in pressure to change AMHIC’s operational model.

 

Work Environment, Salary, and Benefits

  • You will enjoy a remote work environment with the option of a coworking space in Washington, DC. Although your daily work is remote, some travel to DC will be required to attend networking events, meet with prospective members, and attend AMHIC meetings as needed. Preference for candidates in DC-adjacent areas.
  • The budgeted salary range for this position is $295K – $340K with an outstanding benefits package including generous annual and sick leave plus 12 company holidays, comprehensive medical, vision, and dental coverage with an FSA or HSA option, a 401(k) with 10% employer contribution, legal resources, and short and long-term disability.

 

Responsibilities

Strategy and Board Governance

  • Lead the development of multi-year strategic plans with clear objectives and performance metrics.
  • Provide strategic leadership and support to the Board and its committees, including the Executive Committee, Audit, Finance, and Investment Committee, Nominating Committee, and other designated committees.
  • Prepare and review agendas, minutes, and materials for Board and committee meetings, ensuring thorough documentation and preparation for claims appeals if needed.

Financial

  • Monitor all aspects of financial operations and cash management, focusing on cost minimization and administrative efficiency.
  • Lead the preparation and management of the annual budget for SBPA* and AMHIC, including $26 million in premiums for the self-insured plan, $5.9 million for fully insured plans, and $2.9 million in administrative expenses.
  • Oversee the Director of Finance & Administration in responding to inquiries during the annual financial audit, reviewing and approving tax returns, and coordinating regulatory filings with service providers.
  • Oversee the development and dissemination of all communications related to subscriber savings account allocations, payments, and medical loss ratio payouts.
  • Review and authorize non-claims accounts payable and act as the primary signer for non-claims checks, ensuring compliance with AMHIC’s financial procedures.

Marketing

  • Network with current and prospective members in the nonprofit community to identify and nurture new business opportunities. Evaluate opportunities and develop strategies to expand the market.
  • Leverage the expertise of the marketing team at the insurance consultant/advisor, the Board of Directors, current membership, and other stakeholders to increase awareness of AMHIC’s unique value.
  • Lead the onboarding of new member groups.

Benefit Program Development and Oversight

  • Work with the Board and vendor partners to develop benefit programs to enhance AMHIC’s competitive positioning as a leading employee benefit plan provider for all member groups.
  • Ensure the provision of timely, responsive service to all customers relying on SBPA and AMHIC for benefit policy information and administration.
  • Oversee the annual AMHIC open enrollment process and coordinate with benefit managers regarding benefit and premium changes.
  • Lead the organization of the Benefit Manager Training Day in coordination with Alera Group.
  • Oversee the review of claims appeals in accordance with AMHIC’s appeals policy.

Staff and Vendor Leadership

  • Provide strategic leadership and oversight for all AMHIC and SBPA vendor partner and service provider relationships, including Benefit Managers (approximately 60+), Captive Manager (primary contact with the South Carolina Department of Insurance), insurance broker/consultant/administrator, bookkeeper, auditor, tax accountant, investment advisor, third-party administrator, pharmacy benefit manager, stop loss carrier, health advocate, Conifer Health Solutions, representatives from the fully insured plans (HMO, dental, vision, life insurance, legal, employee assistance plan, and flexible spending plan), attorney, actuary, banking institution, website vendor, and liability insurance broker.
  • Supervise the Director of Finance & Administration and the Operations Manager. Evaluate staff to determine strengths and areas for improvement and develop processes to support their growth. Ensure staff expertise is effectively utilized to align with AMHIC’s strategic goals, while maintaining a positive and supportive work environment.

Nonprofit Consortium Management*

  • Provide leadership and support to the NPC Board of Directors, Nominating Committee, and other designated committees.
  • Review agendas, materials, and minutes for Board and annual membership meetings.
  • Oversee preparation of the annual budget (approximately $45K) and execute tax returns. Evaluate and recommend updates to NPC services and dues structure.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable laws and regulations.

 

Qualifications

  • Significant experience developing strategy and leading staff as a C-suite or top-level executive in an association, nonprofit, or similar organization.
  • Proven financial acumen with experience managing budgets over $10M.
  • Strong familiarity with employee benefits, ideally self-funded insurance plans.
  • Demonstrated experience in engaging with and supporting a board of directors, including collaborating on strategy and active involvement in board committees.
  • Solid understanding of regulatory compliance, particularly in the context of insurance and employee benefits, with experience managing regulatory relationships and filings.

*AMHIC has a management services agreement with Select Benefit Plan Administrators, Inc. (SBPA), a wholly owned subsidiary of AMHIC. SBPA provides administrative, consulting, and insurance management services to AMHIC. Employees of SBPA include the Executive Director, the Director of Finance & Administration, and the Operations Manager. AMHIC does not have any employees. The Nonprofit Consortium, Inc. (NPC) was organized to provide various services for the benefit of its members, who are also subscribers of AMHIC.
